Appendix VI - INSTALLATION OPTIONS

Workstation Install Options

The 'Special Options' for the Workstation Install allow you to specify where the BCFPI application files get installed.

The recommended default option is a 'Regular Install'. This leaves all application files on the server. The advantage to this approach is that when you update your BCFPI server, the workstation is automatically updated since all of the files are actually only on the server.

The downside of the 'Regular Install' is that all of the application files need to be loaded across your network when you run the BCFPI software. This can hurt performance especially on slow networks. If network performance is a problem for you, you can choose the 'Workstation files local' option. This will install all of the application files on your workstation. The disadvantage is that when you update your BCFPI server, you must manually update your workstation before it will run the BCFPI software.

If you only some of the computers on your network that have network performance problems, you can use a mix of the two options. You can use the 'Regular Install' for your fast computers, and the 'Workstation files local' option for the slower workstations. Only the workstations for which you used the 'Workstation files local' option will need to be manually updated when you update the BCFPI Server software.

Server Install Options

Database Languages

Currently, the BCFPI user interface is available only in English. You can however choose one of two sets of forms. The 'English/Français' option for "Database Languages" will install the BCFPI questionnaires in both English and French. The other option for "Database Languages" is 'English/Swedish" which will install questionnaires in both English and Swedish. During the initial install of the software, you can choose either (but not both) option(s).

Install Type

The "Install Type" allows you to choose between a Networked or Standalone install. If several users on different computers all need to use the BCFPI software, then you should choose a 'Networked' install. The networked install is the option you will most likely need. Once you have done the networked server install, you will need to do the workstation install on every computer that needs to access the BCFPI software. (Note that once the initial install has been done as a "Networked" install, you will only need to update your server install with subsequent updates - you won't need to update your workstations). If you will only be using the BCFPI on a single computer, then you should do a 'Standalone' install. This will install all of the required BCFPI files on your computer. The BCFPI will only run on the single computer that this install has been run on.
