Answers

1.  When I start the BCFPI software, it tells me that my lease is going to expire on Sept. 30 2003.  What does this mean?
Each database used by the BCFPI software has it's own expiry date. You probably only see this message if you are starting version 3.2.5 of the BCPFI software on the "DEMO VERSION" database. If you are using your 'live' database, you should not see this message (if you do, please contact support@bcfpi.com). The 3.2.6 update to the BCFPI software extends the expiry date of the "DEMO VERSION" database. The "DEMO VERSION" database will remain fully functional up to the expiry date.  This is just a warning message to let you know the expiry date is approaching soon for the "DEMO VERSION" database.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the setting for whether the BCFPI looks at the Live or "DEMO VERSION" database is independent for each computer. Setting one computer to use the Live database only sets that particular computer to look at the live database. This way some computers on your network can be working with your Live data, while others can be using the "DEMO VERSION" database at the same time. This is so you can train on some computers, while doing intakes on other computers at the same time. When a new computer is installed, it opens with the "DEMO VERSION" database by default.

2.  What is the most recent version of the BCFPI softtware?
Our release history can be viewed here.
3.  Do I need to upgrade my BCFPI software?
If you have not run the 3.2.5 update of the BCFPI software, then you must update to the newest version of the BCPFI software. If you have already updated to 3.2.5, then you can look at our release history and decide if an update gives you fixes/features that you need. Please note that if you are updating a previous 3.2.5 (or newer install), the update process is much easier and faster than your initial install.
4.  I need to move my BCFPI to a different computer or different location on the same computer. I need to:
a.  Move a BCFPI  Workstation
If you simply want to move your copy of a BCFPI Workstation, uninstall the BCFPI Workstation from the computer you want to change, then install the BCFPI Workstation to the new location.
b.  Move my BCFPI Server (but I don't have any 'Live' data yet)
If you need to move the BCFPI Server and you do not yet have Live data, you need to uninstall the BCFPI Workstation software from all computers where it is installed, and then uninstall the BCFPI Server software from your server. Next, install the BCFPI Server to the new location, and then install your BCFPI Workstations.
c.  Move my BCFPI Server (I do have 'Live' data already)
To move the BCFPI Server to a different computer when you have live client data, the process takes a little more effort. A more detailed explanation of the process is here.
5.  How do I find out if my computer has the BCFPI Workstation or Server installed?
Open "Add/Remove Programs" in your Windows Control Panel.  If you see, "Indicator32 Software (Workstation)", then you have the BCFPI Workstation software installed on your computer. If you see, "Indicator32 Software (Server/Standalone)" then the BCFPI Server software is installed on your computer.
6.  How do I tell which version of the BCFPI I have installed?
Run the BCFPI software and choose, "Help | About" from the menu on the main BCFPI window. The About dialog will display either the "Outcomes Evaluation Software Version", or the, "Brief Child and Family Phone Interview Software Version". This tells you the version of the BCPFI software that you are running. You can compare the version here with the list of versions in our release history for more information. Note that our new installer technology will prevent you from installing an older version of the BCFPI software when you've already got a newer version installed.
7. I'm trying to run the webbcfpi.exe file to update to the new BCFPI Version.  The install seems to start, but it fails when it tries to start installing the actual files. Why can't I update my BCFPI?
We only make the most recent version of the BCFPI software available, and there's a new copy of webbcfpi.exe for each new install. Prior installs are disabled once we release a new version of the BCFPI. You need to make sure that use the most recent webbcfpi.exe to install/update your BCFPI software. You can get the newest version from our 'secret' install page. (The link to the 'secret' install page is only available to registrered BCFPI users - e-mail us at support@bcfpi.com if you don't know the link to the 'secret' install page).

You can check the version of the webbcfpi.exe file that you have by right clicking on webbcfpi.exe, and selecting 'Properties' from the pop-up menu. Select the 'Version' tab, and that will tell you the version of the webbcfpi.exe file. This should correspond to the newest installation version of the BCFPI software. If it does not, you need to download and run the newest webbcfpi.exe file.

As a concrete example, if you want to install/update to version 3.2.6 of the BCFPI software, then you need to use version 3.2.6 of webbcfpi.exe. If you use the wrong version of webbcfpi.exe, nothing bad will happen, but your install/update will fail. You'll then have to go to our install page to get the most recent webbcfpi.exe for the install/update to work.

8. What is the file, "webbcfpi.exe", for? Where do I find it?
"Webbcfpi.exe" is the file used to start the BCFPI Server/Standalone installation or update. This file is available from our 'secret' install webpage (the link to this page is only for registered BCFPI users - if you need the address of the 'secret' install page, e-mail us at support@bcfpi.com). This file is not used to run the BCFPI software, it's only used to run our install or update.
9. I see there's a new version of the BCFPI software available. How do I get the new version?
Only users with a valid BCFPI lease can install and use the software. If you do have a valid lease for the software, you can get the newest install from our 'secret' install page. The link to the 'secret' install page will remain the same, so you can always go there to get the info you need to obtain the newest version. The 'secret' install page is the same web page you went to, to get any BCFPI version since version 3.2.4.

Please contact support@bcfpi.com if you don't know how to get to the 'secret' install page. If you are part of the CMHO project, you can also contact Brian O'Hara for more info. If you are asking for the link to the 'secret' install page, please make sure you tell us who you are so we can confirm you should be getting the update.

If you do not currently have a lease for the BCFPI software but are interested in using the software, please e-mail us at info@bcfpi.com. We'll contact you and arrange for you to get a demo version and the information you need to evaluate the software.  Please be sure to let us know who you are when you write us.

10. When I try to rebuild my BCFPI database, I get the error, "{A path to your BCFPI data} not found. Scanning table: Unknown.". How can I fix this?
This error will occur if you do not have full permissions to the path in question, or if you have not mapped a drive which is required to rebuild the BCFPI database from a workstation.

As of the 3.2.7 install of the BCPFI, mapped drives are no longer required to rebuild the BCFPI databases, or to use the BCFPI.

If you are using a version of the BCPFI prior to the 3.2.7 install, there there are extra restrictions on how your drive mapping must be done for rebuilds to work properly. Please click here for more information.

11. I need to send you a large file (for example my exported data). How can I send you my file?
Please contact us at support@bcfpi.com so we can help you get the file to us.
12. Does the BCFPI software work with Citrix or Terminal Serivces?
Yes. Please see our page about using BCFPI with Citrix or Terminal Services for more information.
13.
I've run the most recent update, but now my live version says, "Live Blank" for the agency name OR I get a warning that my lease has expired. How can I fix this?

These issues imply that you have not run the BCFPI Server update (webbcfpi.exe or srvbcfpi.exe) on the correct computer. You must run ALL updates on the exact same computer upon which you ran your original server/standalone install.

To correct the problem:

  • Uninstall "Indicator32 Software (Server/Standalone)" from the computer upon which you ran the update most recently.
  • Look in "Add/Remove Programs" in the Windows Control Panel of the rest of your computers, and find the one that has "Indicator32 Software (Server/Standalone)" listed. (You do NOT want the computers with "Indicator32 Software (Workstation)" listed).
  • Run the update on the computer that you found in the previous step. This should be the same computer upon which your original BCFPI Server install was run on.
    • You can further confirm this is the correct computer, by verifying that the update does NOT allow you to change the install target path for the update (the [Browse] button should be disabled).

If you can't find the computer that was originally used for your BCFPI server/standalone install, then please contact us at support@bcfpi.com for help in updating your BCFPI software.

For more information about running installs and updates to the BCFPI software, please see our installation manual.

Note: In a default set up (using the "Networked" install type"), you only need to run BCFPI updates on the single computer used for your initial BCFPI Server install.

14. You sent me "Go Live" files that extended the lease on my Live database, but my Demo database says it's still expired. How do I extend the lease on my Demo database?
Typically we send out lease extensions as part of a full release available from our 'secret' install location. However, sometimes there's a need to extend the lease of your software before we can release a full new version of our software. In such a case, we will send you some "Go Live" files with instructions so that you can keep working with your Live Data.

Extensions to Demo databases on the other hand, are only released as part of regular, full releases from our 'secret' install location. To extend the lease on your Demo database, you simply need to run the most recent update from our 'secret' install location.

15. I want to install an earlier version of BCFPI than what I currently have installed. Can I 'downgrade' my BCFPI software?
Unfortunately, you cannot 'downgrade' a current install of the BCFPI software.  You can only install or upgrade to the most recently available BCFPI software version.
16. I've just run the BCFPI update and now I can't see my Live data. Or, I've just run the update and I'm getting an error that my lease expired in 2002!?!

When you run a BCFPI Server update, you MUST run the update on the same machine used to originally install the BCFPI server software. If you fail to do so, the update won't be able to locate your existing install, and will instead install a new BCFPI server to an incorrect location. When you have a new empty BCFPI install, it's Live database will not be enabled, so you will experience the problems you are currently having.

To correct this problem, please uninstall your recent update attempt. Then locate the machine originally used to install the BCFPI Server software. This should be the only machine on your network that lists, "Indicator32 Software (Server/Standalone)" in the "Add/Remove Programs" section of each computer's Control Panel. All other machines on your network - the BCFPI Workstations should instead list, "Indicator32 Software (Workstation) in "Add/Remove Programs", in their Control Panel. If you have a Windows Server, you should have run the BCFPI Server Install originally directly on this computer, so this is most likely machine you will need to run the update on.

When you run the update on the correct computer, you will notice that you cannot change the install destination, and that the update has dectected your current install location.

If you no longer have the machine originally used to install your BCFPI Server software for some reason, please contact support@bcfpi.com for more assistance.

17. Does BCFPI 3.2.x run on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2008 and/or Office (Excel/Access) 2007 or 2010?
We have not tested, and do not support the BCFPI 3.2.x software on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 2008. The BCFPI software does work with Office 2007, but we have not tested, and are not supporting Office 2010. We are strongly recommending tha Agencies move to BCFPI v4.  BCFPI is compatible with any PC that has a recent version of Internet Explorer.
